Euro NCAP has announced driver assistance ratings for seven cars equipped with roadside assistance.

The BMW iX3 received high ratings while the Mustang Mach-E and Seat Cupra Formentor received high ratings.

Assistance systems in Geely’s [Volvo Cars] Polestar 2 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 were rated moderate while the Toyota Yaris and Opel [aka Vauxhall] Mokka-e has achieved entry level status.

Roadside assistance systems help the driver maintain a constant speed, maintain a safe distance from the car in front and keep the vehicle in the center of the lane by combining Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) (intelligent) with the track centering (LC). The systems are designed to assist the driver, not to take control, and the driver should keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road at all times.

Therefore, Euro NCAP not only tests the car’s ability to assist and promote safer driving, but also assesses how the system engages the driver and, if the unexpected happens, what safety safeguard is offered by the vehicle. .

The technology, first offered on high-end vehicles, has become widespread in recent years and is now available on cars of all categories, albeit with varying degrees of sophistication and at different prices. In its previous rounds of assisted driving tests in 2018 and 2020, Euro NCAP found that some vehicles promised more than they could deliver, implying, by name and interaction with the driver, that they offered more. automation than they were able to do.

However, all of the cars tested in this round offered a balance between assistive skill – the degree to which the system can assist the driver – and driver engagement – the extent to which the driver feels they need to keep control. control and not disengage from driving. task.

Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP, said: “This balance between assistance and commitment is crucial. Cars are not yet capable of fully automated driving and drivers should not be misled into believing that they are. Reports from the United States have highlighted the very serious problems that can arise when people have unrealistic expectations of what such systems can deliver and when the car they are driving in does not actively try to get them back on the track. We’re delighted that the manufacturers represented in this series of tests are clear about the level of support they can provide. ”

The iX3, a variant of the X3 range, has a new set of sensors, not yet available on its thermal engine stable mates and the dimming of its automated driving system applied only to the electric version.

The Polestar 2 obtained a moderate ranking, limited by its performance in vehicle assistance. Polestar will be performing a wireless software update (OTA) “very soon” and Euro NCAP said it “looks forward to evaluating the upgraded vehicle in the near future”.
