Navy vet with brand new vehicle for service to disabled veterans and local children

To celebrate Veterans Day this week, a dedicated 50-year volunteer for disabled American veterans has been given a new van so he can continue his labor of love.

Former US Marine Len Johnson visits the homes of other veterans in Philadelphia to support them in any way he can.

At the age of 18 he served in Vietnam and the Lance Corporal received multiple shrapnel wounds in a firefight causing him to lose the use of his left foot. Despite this, he serves local veterans and drops off toys for children at the Catholic Workers’ Orphanage.

Video shows the moment Len was surprised by a new, modernized Chevy Traverse at TrueCar’s 8th Annual DrivenToDrive initiative – which is designed to honor the sacrifices made by service members and their families by meeting their mobility needs.

“I feel great knowing that I can finally retire my 20-year-old car and continue my service to the community with this donation,” said the 74-year-old vet who also has reduced mobility in his right leg.

Johnson uses his own vehicle with over 300,000 miles for all of his volunteer activities, including helping incarcerated veterans.

Over a lifetime of service, Len was awarded the Purple Heart, the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Bravery, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, and a Citation. presidential unit.
