Sony and Honda plan to make electric vehicles together

Sony and Honda plan to form a new company to jointly design and sell electric vehicles. The venture has yet to be finalized, but the two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding that spells out their intent. The new company, which has not yet been named, is expected to be established this year, with sales of the first electric vehicle model expected in 2025.

Honda will manufacture the first model, with the new company handling the design, development and sales of the vehicle, and Sony set to develop a mobility services platform. The partnership aims to combine Honda’s expertise in manufacturing and marketing cars with Sony’s capabilities in image sensors, telecommunications and entertainment.

“Sony’s purpose is to ‘fill the world with emotion through the power of creativity and technology,'” Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said in a statement. “Through this alliance with Honda, which has accumulated vast experience and global achievements in the automotive industry over many years and continues to make groundbreaking advances in this field, we intend to build on our vision. to “make the space of mobility an emotional space”, and contribute to the evolution of mobility centered on safety, entertainment and adaptability.

“The new company will aim to be at the forefront of innovation, evolution and expansion of mobility around the world, taking a broad and ambitious approach to creating value that exceeds expectations and expectations. customers’ imagination,” said Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe. “We will achieve this by leveraging Honda’s advanced technology and environmental and safety expertise, while aligning the technological strengths of both companies. Although Sony and Honda are companies that share many historical and cultural similarities, our areas of technology expertise are very different. Therefore, I believe that this alliance that brings together the strengths of our two companies offers great possibilities for the future of mobility.

Sony has signaled its intention to enter the automotive world for a while, but this marks its first concrete step into the commercial industry. At CES 2020, Sony showed off an electric concept car called Vision-S, and followed it up at CES 2022 with the Vision-S 02. At that time, Sony announced plans to form an operating company called Sony Mobility by spring 2022.; it would seem that the new partnership with Honda has rendered this idea moot.
