The 2024 Rolls-Royce Specter EV ushers in an updated spirit of ecstasy

  • Rolls-Royce’s Specter EV will feature a revised version of the Spirit of Ecstasy which it says is more aerodynamic.
  • The updated hood ornament is 0.7 inches shorter than today’s Silver Lady and includes updates to the part design.
  • Roll-Royce will retain the current ornament on its range of petrol vehicles.

Even Rolls-Royce’s Spirit of Ecstasy requires a little cosmetic surgery every once in a while, as the British marque unveiled an updated look for its illustrious hood ornament. At 3.3 inches tall, the latest version of the Spirit of Ecstasy is almost 0.7 inches shorter than the current version.

Rolls-Royce did more than just miniaturize the decorative piece; he also subtly remodeled the Silver Lady, slightly altering her flowing robes (that’s right, they’re robes, not wings) and adjusting her stance. Accordingly, theft. . . uh, the lady in the dress is no longer standing with her feet together and her legs straight. Instead, her legs are now slightly bent, one in front of the other. Below you can compare the new hood ornament (left) with the old one shown on the Cullinan.

Rolls-Royce’s plans to adapt the new Spirit of Ecstasy to the 2024 Specter electric vehicle, and it claims the more aerodynamic shape of the ornament plays a role in the drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.26 (a figure equal to that of the likes of the since-discontinued BMW i8 hybrid sports car) recorded by prototypes of the upcoming battery-powered coupe. Alas, Rolls did not disclose the prototypes of the Cd of Specter equipped with today’s Spirit of Ecstasy. As such, it’s difficult to determine the actual role of the silver lady’s cosmetic upgrades in the wind tunnel and, in turn, whether this contributes to significantly improving the high-speed two-door EV’s power consumption.

Either way, we’d bet its effects aren’t particularly significant given that Rolls opts to keep the current Spirit of Ecstasy on its Phantom, Ghost and Cullinan petrol models, none of which are posters for the show. ‘energetic efficiency. The new ornament, meanwhile, is for future Rolls-Royce vehicles, including the Spectre.
