Tonale will be Alfa Romeo’s last petrol model
Italian car brand Alfa Romeo will be one of the first traditional luxury automakers to switch its entire product line to purely electric drivetrains. The company previously announced that the shift to 100% electric vehicles will take place by 2027. It will be the first of 14 global brands from its parent company Stellantis to switch to all-EVs.
Under the plan, the all-new 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale will be the last gasoline-powered model the brand will sell in the United States. Even it will be partially electrified, with a plug-in hybrid powertrain available.
During a presentation at the Seattle International Auto Show, Larry Dominique, senior vice president of the Alfa Romeo brand in North America, confirmed that all future Alfa Romeo vehicles introduced in the United States will be fully electrical. No new gas-powered Alfas will be offered in America after the Tonale’s debut, he said.

Despite the switch to electric power, Alfa Romeo cars will continue to reflect the company’s performance heritage as high-performance driver cars, Dominique said, noting that the company has no plans to build road devices.
Next are the electric replacements for the Alfa Romeo Stelvio crossover and the Alfa Romeo Giulia sedan. The lineup is expected to expand further to include a larger luxury crossover.
The all-new 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale
The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale is a smaller compact luxury crossover than its Alfa Romeo Stelvio sibling. It will be offered with a choice of powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) that produces 272 horsepower and has an all-electric range of over 30 miles.
The Tonale PHEV will use a 180-hp 1.3-liter turbo-four up front and a 90 kW electric motor on the rear axle. A 256-horsepower non-hybrid turbocharged four-cylinder engine will also be offered. All Tonales will come standard with all-wheel drive, with the PHEV including a six-speed automatic, while the non-hybrid will include a nine-speed automatic.
Alfa will equip its new SUV with a 10.25-inch Uconnect infotainment system that supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as Amazon Alexa integration. A customizable 12.3-inch digital dashboard comes standard.
